On September 3, 2025, the 10th-grade students visited the Buchenwald Memorial near Weimar. The day was dedicated to confronting one of the darkest chapters of German history.
After their arrival, the students first watched a film screening, which deepened their understanding of what they would later see on site and shed light on personal stories. Afterwards, they were given a guided tour of the former concentration camp grounds. They learned in detail how the camp was structured, what functions the different buildings served, and how the lives of the prisoners were organized in a deeply inhumane way. Since many had already studied the topic in class, numerous questions were asked, leading to a very intense discussion.
The final visit to the bell tower and the ring graves was particularly moving. Today, these places serve as memorials and reminders.
For many, it was a difficult but important day. The visit to Buchenwald made it clear to everyone: a culture of remembrance means more than just learning facts – it is about consciously engaging with questions of humanity, responsibility, and democracy.
